About Ascot

Ascot is best known for its world-famous racecourse, but there’s far more to this elegant Berkshire town than horse racing alone. Blending countryside charm with a touch of royal heritage, Ascot offers relaxing walks, refined days out, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it ideal for families, couples, and solo visitors alike. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or planning a full weekend, there’s plenty to explore.

One of the town’s biggest highlights is, of course, Ascot Racecourse. Even outside the glamour of Royal Ascot, the racecourse hosts events throughout the year, from themed race days to family-friendly fixtures. The atmosphere is lively, the grounds are immaculate, and attending a race day is a great way to experience the traditions and excitement that have made Ascot famous worldwide.

Just beyond the racecourse, Ascot offers easy access to some of the most stunning outdoor spaces in Berkshire. The Windsor Great Park area is particularly popular, with miles of open parkland, ancient trees, and peaceful lakes. One of the standout spots within the wider park is Savill Garden, celebrated for its beautifully curated landscapes, seasonal flower displays, and tranquil walking routes. It’s a wonderful place to unwind, especially in spring and summer when the colours are at their brightest.

Another nearby gem is Virginia Water Lake, a favourite for walkers, joggers, and families. The circular trail around the lake is gentle and scenic, with woodlands, cascading waterfalls, and wide open viewpoints. It’s ideal for a leisurely stroll, a morning of photography, or simply sitting by the water with a coffee and enjoying the peaceful setting.

For a quieter nature experience, Englemere Pond in North Ascot offers a calm woodland walk with a boardwalk path around a small lake. It’s a great choice if you prefer something less busy, with a bit of wildlife-spotting and a real “hidden gem” feel.

Ascot is also within easy reach of Windsor, making it a perfect base if you want to combine your visit with a little royal history. Windsor Castle, Eton’s traditional architecture, and the lovely riverside atmosphere are all just a short journey away. Many people choose to spend a morning exploring Ascot and the surrounding gardens, then head to Windsor for an afternoon of sightseeing and shopping.

If you prefer something active, the countryside surrounding Ascot has plenty of woodland trails, cycle paths, and open green spaces. These are ideal for dog-walking, family picnics, or simply escaping the busier parts of town for some fresh air. The area has a mixture of flat paths and gentle hills, making it suitable for all fitness levels.

To round off a day in Ascot, visitors often enjoy the town’s selection of cosy pubs, fine-dining restaurants, and charming cafés. Whether you’re looking for afternoon tea, a relaxed meal after a long walk, or something more celebratory after a race day, you’ll find plenty of welcoming spots.

Ascot may be small, but it’s full of character, greenery, and charm. It’s the ideal blend of countryside calm and traditional British heritage — a place where you can enjoy both lively events and peaceful escapes, all within a short distance of London.
