About Staines-upon-Thames
Staines-upon-Thames, commonly known as Staines, is a lively market town in Surrey, England, located along the River Thames. It offers a mix of history, scenic beauty, shopping, and entertainment, making it a great place to visit whether you’re a local or just passing through. Here are some of the top things to do and see in Staines.
1. Enjoy the Riverside Walks
One of the town’s best features is its stunning location along the River Thames. The towpath provides a perfect setting for a relaxing walk, jog, or cycle ride. You can start at the Staines Bridge and follow the Thames Path towards Runnymede, where the Magna Carta was signed in 1215. The route is scenic, with plenty of wildlife, riverside pubs, and beautiful views of passing boats.
Just a short distance from Staines, Runnymede is one of the most historically significant sites in the UK. It is where King John sealed the Magna Carta, an important document in the development of democracy. Today, you can explore the Magna Carta Memorial, the John F. Kennedy Memorial, and the stunning art installation "Writ in Water." The open green spaces and the riverside setting make it a peaceful place for a picnic or a leisurely stroll.
3. Shop at Two Rivers and Elmsleigh Shopping Centres
For those who love shopping, Staines has two main retail areas: the Two Rivers Shopping Centre and the Elmsleigh Shopping Centre. Two Rivers combines retail stores with leisure options, including restaurants, a cinema, and coffee shops. The Elmsleigh Shopping Centre features a variety of high-street brands and independent shops, making it a great place for a day of retail therapy.
4. Take a Boat Trip on the Thames
If you want to experience Staines from a different perspective, consider taking a boat trip along the River Thames. Several companies offer boat hire or cruises, allowing you to explore the waterways, enjoy the countryside, and even stop off at nearby attractions such as Windsor or Hampton Court.
For nature lovers, Staines Moor is a hidden gem. This beautiful open common land is rich in wildlife and offers a peaceful retreat from the busy town centre. It’s an ideal spot for walking, birdwatching, or just enjoying the fresh air. The River Colne flows through the moor, adding to its picturesque charm.
One of the UK’s most popular theme parks, Thorpe Park, is just a few miles from Staines. It’s a must-visit for thrill-seekers, featuring roller coasters like Stealth, The Swarm, and Colossus. During Halloween, the park hosts the famous Fright Nights, offering a spooky experience with horror mazes and live actors.
If you’re looking for a peaceful green space within Staines itself, Lammas Park is the perfect choice. It has a play area for children, tennis courts, and open spaces for picnics and relaxing. The park also hosts community events throughout the year.
Whether you’re looking for history, shopping, adventure, or relaxation, Staines-upon-Thames has something for everyone.
