Things to do and see in Twickenham

Twickenham, located in southwest London along the River Thames, is best known as the home of English rugby, but it offers far more than sport. With riverside walks, elegant architecture, and green open spaces, it combines a lively atmosphere with a relaxed, suburban feel.

The town’s most famous landmark is Twickenham Stadium, the largest dedicated rugby union stadium in the world. On match days the area comes alive with supporters, while on quieter days visitors can take stadium tours and explore the World Rugby Museum to learn about the sport’s history.

For those who prefer something more tranquil, the River Thames is central to Twickenham’s charm. The riverside paths are perfect for walking, cycling, or simply watching boats glide past. Eel Pie Island, a small private island in the Thames, has a fascinating musical history linked to 1960s rock and jazz scenes.

Just a short walk away is Strawberry Hill House, a striking Gothic Revival villa built in the 18th century. Its dramatic interiors and landscaped gardens make it one of the area’s most distinctive attractions.

Nearby, York House Gardens offers beautifully maintained riverside gardens and the famous “Naked Ladies” statues, providing a peaceful spot to relax.

Twickenham also has a good mix of independent cafés, traditional pubs, and local shops along Church Street and in the town centre. Combined with excellent transport links into central London and its strong sense of community, Twickenham offers a balanced mix of sport, culture, history, and riverside living.
