About Runnymede
Things to Do and See
Runnymede is a historically significant and picturesque area in Surrey, best known as the site where King John sealed the Magna Carta in 1215. This charming destination offers a mix of history, natural beauty, and cultural attractions, making it an excellent place for a day out or a longer visit. Whether you're interested in walking through beautiful landscapes, learning about British history, or enjoying outdoor activities, Runnymede has something for everyone.
Visit the Magna Carta Memorial
One of Runnymede’s most famous attractions is the Magna Carta Memorial, maintained by the National Trust. This simple yet striking monument was erected in 1957 by the American Bar Association to commemorate the signing of the Magna Carta, a document that laid the foundation for modern democracy and human rights. Visitors can explore the site, read the information panels, and reflect on its historical importance.
Explore the Air Forces Memorial
A short walk from the Magna Carta Memorial is the Air Forces Memorial, which stands on Cooper’s Hill. This impressive structure honors the more than 20,000 Royal Air Force personnel who lost their lives during World War II. The memorial offers breathtaking views over the River Thames and the surrounding countryside, making it a peaceful and poignant place to visit.
Walk Along the River Thames
Runnymede is situated along the River Thames, making it an ideal location for scenic walks and boat trips. The Thames Path offers beautiful riverside strolls where visitors can enjoy the lush greenery, spot local wildlife, and even stop at one of the nearby pubs for a relaxing drink. If you prefer to be on the water, you can rent a boat or take a guided cruise from nearby towns like Windsor or Staines.
Discover the JFK Memorial
Another fascinating site in Runnymede is the John F. Kennedy Memorial, dedicated to the late U.S. president. This memorial, set within a serene wooded area, was a gift from the British people to the United States and is officially regarded as American soil. The simple stone monument is accessed by a steep, symbolic pathway, which represents the struggle for freedom and justice.
Visit the Runnymede Pleasure Grounds
For a more relaxed and family-friendly experience, Runnymede Pleasure Grounds is a fantastic spot for picnicking, playing, or simply enjoying nature. This riverside park features open green spaces, a playground, and a café, making it perfect for families with children. During the summer, you can also find boat rides and ice cream stands, adding to the fun atmosphere.
Windsor and Great Park
Just a short drive from Runnymede, Windsor offers additional attractions, including Windsor Castle, the official residence of the King. Visitors can explore the grand state apartments, St. George’s Chapel, and the famous Long Walk. Nearby, Windsor Great Park provides vast open spaces, scenic trails, and historic monuments like the Copper Horse statue.
Whether you're interested in history, nature, or simply a peaceful day out, Runnymede offers a unique mix of cultural and scenic attractions that make it well worth a visit.
