Things to do in Chertsey
Chertsey is a charming historic town nestled in Surrey, England, with a rich heritage and plenty to offer visitors. From riverside walks to fascinating historical landmarks, this picturesque town is perfect for a family day out, a weekend trip, or even a peaceful solo stroll. Whether you're into history, nature, or just a good pub lunch, Chertsey delivers something for everyone.
Explore Chertsey Abbey and Abbey Fields
One of the most historically significant sites in Chertsey is the remains of Chertsey Abbey, founded in 666 AD by Saint Erkenwald. Although much of the original abbey was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, you can still visit the ruins in Abbey Fields. This peaceful green space offers a tranquil spot for reflection and a fascinating glimpse into the town’s early religious importance.
Enjoy the Thames Path and Riverside Walks
The River Thames flows gracefully past Chertsey, making it a great spot for scenic riverside walks. The Thames Path provides beautiful walking and cycling routes where you can enjoy the calm waters, watch boats pass by, or spot local wildlife. In the summer, it’s also a popular place for paddleboarding, kayaking, or just enjoying a picnic on the riverbank.
Have Fun at Thorpe Park Resort
For thrill-seekers, Thorpe Park is right on Chertsey’s doorstep. It’s one of the UK’s leading theme parks, with rollercoasters, water rides, and immersive experiences. It's especially popular with teens and young adults, but even families with younger kids can find plenty to enjoy. During Halloween season, the park hosts “Fright Nights,” offering an extra adrenaline rush for the brave.
Visit Chertsey Museum
Tucked away in a beautiful Georgian house, Chertsey Museum is a hidden gem that offers a deep dive into local history. Exhibits cover everything from the Roman period through to modern times. The museum also has a fascinating collection of 18th-century costumes, local artefacts, and displays on the history of the Abbey and the town’s role during World War II.
Wander Around the Town Centre
Chertsey’s town centre is a lovely place to explore, with independent shops, cosy cafes, and traditional pubs. The architecture is a mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings, adding character to your stroll. The Golden Grove and The Crown Hotel are just two of the many pubs where you can enjoy a hearty meal and a pint after exploring the town.
Relax at Chertsey Meads
If you're looking for a more open green space, Chertsey Meads is a large riverside park ideal for families, dog walkers, and nature lovers. With wide grassy fields, river access, and a children's play area, it's a popular spot for weekend outings. In the warmer months, you’ll often see families flying kites, playing games, or enjoying a BBQ.
Whether you're after history, outdoor activities, family fun or just a relaxed day in a charming English town, Chertsey has it all. With its balance of heritage and leisure, it’s a fantastic place to visit for locals and tourists alike.
