About Sunningdale
Sunningdale is a refined and peaceful village on the Berkshire–Surrey border, known for its leafy streets, elegant homes, and relaxed atmosphere. Although smaller than some of its neighbours, it offers a surprising number of things to see and do, especially for visitors who enjoy nature, good food, and an unhurried pace of life. Its charm lies in its simplicity: quiet beauty, excellent green spaces, and a sense of understated luxury.
At the heart of the area is Sunningdale village centre, a compact but stylish high street filled with independent shops, cafés, bakeries, and friendly local businesses. It’s a lovely place for a relaxed wander — whether you're picking up artisan food, browsing boutique stores, or enjoying a slow morning coffee. The village has an upscale yet welcoming feel, making it ideal for anyone who likes peaceful surroundings without losing access to good amenities.
Just beyond the centre, one of Sunningdale’s main attractions is the abundance of woodland and countryside walks. The area is surrounded by lush forests, quiet lanes, and gentle walking trails that weave between Berkshire and Surrey. These paths are popular with dog walkers, families, and runners who enjoy taking in fresh air and greenery. Spring and autumn are especially beautiful, with changing colours creating picturesque scenery around every turn.
A short distance from the village is Windsor Great Park, one of the region’s most impressive outdoor spaces. From Sunningdale, it’s easy to reach the more peaceful edges of the park, where wide-open spaces, ancient oak trees, and long avenues make for fantastic walking and cycling routes. The park’s sheer scale gives visitors plenty of choice — from long weekend hikes to short afternoon strolls.
For those who enjoy golfing, Sunningdale Golf Club is one of the UK’s most famous courses, surrounded by magnificent heathland and woodland. Known for its historic clubhouse, pristine fairways, and classic design, it draws players from all over the world. Even if you’re not a golfer, the surrounding heath is beautiful to walk through, offering a natural landscape of pines, heather, and quiet trails.
Nearby Virginia Water Lake is another must-visit spot, ideal for families and anyone who loves the outdoors. The circular walk around the lake is scenic and varied, with woodland paths, lakeside viewpoints, and plenty of space to unwind. It’s also a great place for photography, picnics, and gentle weekend outings.
If you prefer cosy indoor experiences, Sunningdale offers several excellent pubs, restaurants, and cafés. Many of these venues combine traditional charm with modern menus, making them perfect after a long walk or a day exploring the surrounding countryside. Afternoon tea, Sunday roasts, and relaxed dinners are all popular ways to round off a day in the area.
For a change of pace, Sunningdale is perfectly positioned for short trips to Windsor, Ascot, and Virginia Water, giving you access to racecourses, historical landmarks, and more green spaces within minutes. This makes the village a great base for exploring a wider part of Berkshire.
What makes Sunningdale special is its blend of tranquillity and quality. It’s a place where you can slow down, enjoy nature, savour good food, and experience a slice of English village life at its most elegant. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or staying longer, Sunningdale offers a peaceful escape wrapped in countryside beauty.
