About Addlestone

Addlestone, a pleasant town in Surrey, offers a mixture of local history, green spaces, and easy access to cultural attractions. While often seen as a quieter place compared to its neighbours like Weybridge and Chertsey, Addlestone has a charm that reveals itself in its landmarks, parks, and community atmosphere.

One of the most distinctive sights in Addlestone is the Crouch Oak Tree, believed to be over 1,000 years old. Often described as one of the oldest trees in Britain, it has stood as a silent witness to centuries of history. The tree is associated with Queen Elizabeth I, who is said to have dined beneath its branches. Visiting the Crouch Oak is a reminder of the area’s deep roots in English heritage.

For those who enjoy time outdoors, Addlestone is surrounded by green spaces perfect for walking and relaxing. Victory Park is a favourite with families, offering wide open lawns, children’s play areas, sports courts, and plenty of space for picnics. The park often serves as the venue for local events, bringing the community together. Not far away, Sayes Court Farm provides a more rural setting, giving visitors a taste of Surrey countryside within walking distance of the town centre.

History lovers will appreciate the area’s connections to Chertsey Abbey, which once controlled much of the land in and around Addlestone. While the abbey itself is located in nearby Chertsey, the legacy of monastic influence can still be traced through the landscape. Addlestone also has links to the early days of aviation, with Brooklands Museum only a short distance away. Though technically in Weybridge, the museum is a must-visit for anyone staying in Addlestone, showcasing the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation, as well as Concorde.

The town also benefits from the River Thames and the Wey Navigation close by. A walk along the river towpaths offers scenic views, chances to spot wildlife, and peaceful routes that link Addlestone to neighbouring towns. Boating enthusiasts can enjoy watching narrowboats passing through locks, while walkers can make their way towards Weybridge or beyond.

Addlestone itself has grown in recent years, with a redeveloped town centre that includes a cinema, shops, and a variety of cafés and restaurants. It’s a comfortable spot to enjoy a meal or catch a film after a day exploring. The town’s local pubs also retain a traditional character, offering a relaxed atmosphere for both residents and visitors.

Another point of interest is St Paul’s Church, built in the 19th century and still a focal point for the community. Its architecture and stained glass provide a glimpse into the Victorian era. For those who enjoy more modern leisure, Addlestone Leisure Centre offers swimming, gym facilities, and fitness classes, making it a hub for staying active.

What makes Addlestone appealing is not only its own attractions but also its location. Within minutes, you can reach Windsor Great Park, RHS Garden Wisley, or the historic town of Guildford. Addlestone acts as a gateway to exploring some of Surrey’s best sites while maintaining its own quieter, small-town appeal.

In short, Addlestone may not shout the loudest, but it rewards those who take the time to explore. From ancient oaks and peaceful parks to riverside walks and cultural outings nearby, there’s plenty to see and do in this corner of Surrey.
